DescriptionVolunteer mentors are required to provide short term support to pupils at Stoke High School in Ipswich aged 11-16 with English as an Additional Language (EAL).
You would be required to provide mentor/befriender support to students who are new to the country, meet with them once a week or fortnight to talk, provide some tutoring on basic English and provide general guidance. Ipswich acts as a “dispersal point” for refugees and asylum seekers so some students only stay a short time. Others are unaccompanied young people aged 11-16, usually Afghan males or Polish young people who need support to integrate into school and the wider community. Mentoring support can be extremely valuable to these young people. Skills and Qualifications RequiredNo qualifications are required. But you are required to undertake accredited mentor training provided by the BeMMaD project. Skills and qualities required include communication and active listening, willing to help, reliable, positive and able to be non-judgmental. Volunteers are required to undergo an enhanced Criminal Records (CRB) check.
Additional InformationTraining and on going support is provided. All reasonable expenses are reimbursed, including child care.
